OMG the HV40. This was my first foray into the video scene and... I miss this little thing so much. Even today the quality holds up and the 24p looks filmic to this day. Great camera.

I just inherited an HV30 and found this video very timely. I used to use and still have an old Elura and Vixia. I really miss the smooth optical zoom of all these old camcorders

If you are not some pro filmaker and dont care about time i think this little one is good thing to go with, still has great image after all these years.

I had the same idea long time ago , for tape camcorders with dead tape mechanism , but that still switch on and output video signal . But at the time , true portable video recorders with HDMi i input were non existent or unavailable out of Asia

I love the ability to add DSLR lenses with an adaptor

This video convinced me to try to breathe a new life to my HV40 (even though it's 2020)! :D I'm getting the Atomos Ninja 2 these days so I'll give it a try! I'm doing multicam work and I'm very curious how the HV40+Atomos will look like in combination with the Lumix G85 and Panasonic VX878 which are both 4K cameras :D I've successfully mixed 1080p and 4K footage (upscaled the 1080p from Canon 550D), and as long as the lower resolution camera shoots only close-ups it looks really good (you get a soft focus, which is good for hiding skin imperfections).

We still use ours, we paired it with Atomos Ninja Star a few years back, Bypasses tape, (which we still run as backup in most cases) and ups the recording bit rate by a huge amount, still works great. And we just added a second one to our gear, 2nd hand off ebay, and in better condition than the one we already had. We like the HV40 a lot, apart from 2 things, the focus ring is behind the lcd when flipped out and hard to get to, especially if you have the screen tipped. and the focus peaking is just a white highlight line, not a selectable color highlight like say on the Canon Vixia G20, which we use a lot also. It's still a great little camera, good color, zooms great when tripod mounted, and pairing it with Ninja and recording in pro res adding 150+ mbps to the data rate is awesome (canon G20 data rate is about 28/30mbps i think, and HDV tape is about 24mbps). Good video, glad we weren't the lone crazy person adding a ninja to this camera and making it still a viable piece of gear, lol

This was one of my favorite cameras too. I switched from a DVX100B to the HV40 in 2010 to get into HD for about a year, maybe two... Then everything went to DSLR land. The projects I shot on the HDV camera I think look better than some of the early 60D stuff. The SD canon 1440 HD vixia camcorders that came out after didn't compete.

I remember those 2008 times when this cam was all the rage. I couldn't afford one then tho! My dream setup would've been a HV40 with a high end 35mm adapter! I got a Nikon in 2011 and then Sony A7S in 2015.

Thanks for this video. Believe I have found a cheaper DIY with a similar idea. You can purchase HDMI input to USB-C adapters which will plug into an android mobile phone and then use video capture software. I'm planning to use a hot shoe phone mount and then use use the dongle into the HDMI out of the camera. Will let you know how things go. While you can get newer more capable cameras having that HV30 lens still provides a great image.

Love it.I actually took mine out about a month ago after about 3 years.I'd probably use it more often if I had the FireWire card.

I still have this little gem and it works great... how did you manage depth of field, though?

Got my Canon HV30 lying around in my room. I'm missing the charger. Probably just gonna buy it online and revive it. Didn't think about using an atomos recorder to capture footage. Super clever!

I found one of these for 5 bucks at a goodwill! I then found a capture card for 40 bucks on FB marketplace. Together they work well, at least just for studio type work, where its not inconvenient to have it tethered to the computer

So dope! Will this get a clean HDMI signal on the HV30 as well? Would love to revive that camera since the lcd screen broke on mine and I would need a monitor to use it anyways

Do you think this camcorder would be better then the Canon r800? They both are like 200 dollars now but the hv40 was top of the line in its day and the r800 is really cheap consumer. I'm debating on getting one of the two and didn't know if technology has caught up enough with hv40 at a reasonable price. I have firewire and everything so tape isn't a huge deal.

For the camcorder, however, I have the question of whether you can get the files on the PC without Firewire, since I cannot retrofit Firewire on my desktop PC and I would just like to digitize my recordings on Mini-DV tapes. I hope the creator of the video @Matt Quattro can hopefully help me.

Got two of those babies man the PAL Legria and the NTSC Vixia, their beautiful, I love them and I would never give them up

I have two of these that i found in a skip at a school. I rescued them. They are the best camera's i have ever touched for mini-dv HDMI is true at 25fps... Importing them to pc is a mission though
